A Few Timely Tips for a Successful Family Reunion

• Get everyone involved in the reunion planning process to build relationships and anticipation.

• Start planning early—six months to a year in advance--so attendees can save money to travel, schedule vacation time at work and make other necessary arrangements.
• Gather everyone's e-mail addresses so you can communicate quickly and conveniently.
• Have the family computer expert set up a Family Reunion web site where you can post comments, photos, links and more.
• Bring to the reunion your photos, home movies/videos, items representing the family's heritage or ethnicity (recipes, traditional clothing, music, songs, dances, etc.), family trees—things to share that tell the family's story.
• Plan activities that focus on interests family members share. For example, set up a table displaying old family photos, play games that require knowledge of the family's past, trade stories about colorful relatives.
• Make up games based on your family's history, such as your family's version of Trivial Pursuit, or identifying people in baby pictures or old photos.
• Award prizes for person who traveled the farthest, oldest and youngest attendees, most grandchildren, longest married.
• Create a questionnaire for everyone to complete prior to the reunion. Ask for birth dates and places, marriages, parents, medical history. Request that relatives provide information about memorable events in their lifetime, traditions from their childhood, places they have lived and visited, hobbies and any other interesting details.
• Using the information from the questionnaires plus photos from the reunion, make a souvenir brochure or booklet about your family to send out after the event.
